Few tips to help you quit 'somking'

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY - 31ST MAY 2008


This year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day, 31st May 2008, was "Tobacco-free Youth". Tobacco use kills 5.4 million people a year - an average of one person every six seconds - and accounts for one in 10 adult deaths worldwide. It is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of deaths in the world.

Here are a few tips to help you quit:

1. Think about your reasons for smoking and find less harmful ways of fulfilling that need.

2. Weigh the "pros" and "cons" of quitting smoking and decide what is really important to you, the benefits of smoking or the benefits of quitting.

3. Prepare to quit smoking by Looking at your past quit attempts and assessing what made you fail Setting a stop date. Keeping a smoking diary.

4. Quit smoking by using the 4 Ds when cravings hit:
a) Do something else
b) Delay
c) Deep breathing
d) Drink water

5. Be active. Walking is a great way to move and it's a quick fix for the urge to smoke.

6. Eat a healthy diet and limit caffeine and alcohol.
